Dr. Mar graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry and completed a one-year AEGD residency in the US Army.
He has over 15 years of pediatric dental experience. In addition to instructing Dental Assistants and Hygienists in community college vocational programs until recently, he continues as a member of the auxiliary faculty at the University of Washington Department of Pediatric Dentistry.
If your child has crooked teeth or if your dentist foresees crowding issues in the future, consider children’s orthodontics to correct the problem sooner rather than later.
One of the most common questions that orthodontists hear from parents is what age should their child first see an orthodontist. While most children are not ready for comprehensive orthodontic treatment until their adult teeth come in, there are several common orthodontic problems that should be corrected with limited treatment at a young age to reduce the need for more invasive and extensive treatment as an adolescent.
Orthodontic treatment to create a beautiful and healthy smile is tremendously valuable. Whether you have severe orthodontic needs or mild misalignment, orthodontic treatment can provide a lifetime of benefit with a healthy and beautiful smile.
Clear braces, like those offered by Invisalign, are just as they sound. The clear trays are placed over your teeth (like a mouthguard but slimmer, form-fitting, and almost unnoticeable) to gradually reposition your teeth over time. Invisalign is typically reserved for less severe misalignment cases, and the severity of the correction needed will determine how long you need to wear your trays.
Dental braces are now a more comfortable and effective form of treatment than ever before thanks to the years that have gone into perfecting the design and approach. Now you can get out of conventional braces in a matter of a few months, but it depends on the severity of the misalignment and how many adjustments will be needed to fully correct your bite.
More than ever adults are seeking orthodontic care to improve their smile and overall oral health. Teeth that are in good alignment create a nice smile and are also easier to clean and take care of. Some adults are hesitant to peruse orthodontic treatment because they are concerned about how they will look.
A pediatric dentist has gone through a special set of courses to cater to children with special needs or who otherwise need gentle care. Following dental school, this training lasts around two to three years after graduation. It is filled with extensive study where they will even work in hospitals to treat children with more severe dental needs and emergencies.
The reason why you may consider a fluoride treatment is because if you’re losing fluoride quicker than you are taking it in, you’re likely going to be at risk for tooth decay. Fluoride works to help prevent tooth decay by defending against acid attacks caused by sugars and plaque bacteria in your mouth. Fluoride can also reverse tooth decay.
Digital X-rays offer countless improvements over the results of traditional X-rays. After the sensor has taken an image of your teeth, it is instantly projected onto the office screen where your dentist can view it.
Our children are bold and adventurous and as their parent, you’re bound to end up with an emergency at some point, whether it’s a sprained arm or a bumped head. But, when a dental emergency occurs, it can be tricky to know where to go first.
Your dentist will have professional tools and specialized knowledge, meaning they will look for things you may not know about or be able to see without a good light and tools in hand. A dentist will be able to check for early signs of decay, and the hygienist will also give a deeper cleaning than at-home brushing allows for.
Once they are at the office, we’ll also do everything we can to help keep them entertained while you are waiting to see the dentist. We have many entertainment options for children in the waiting room and during their dental exam. This can help curb their anxiety about their visit.

Keeping their tooth health in check will also ensure that they have stronger and healthier teeth, and the regular visit will make sure that they’re developing good dental habits, so they know how to care for them properly.
While you can find mouthguards in the store that can be molded to your child’s teeth by boiling them and pressing them on, these mouthguards do not fit as well as one specially made by a dentist. This means they do not offer the same level of comfort and protection. They also tend to be extra bulky and don’t always offer complete coverage, lessening their effectiveness.
